College Awareness Week is aimed at informing students of College Education options available to them and support resources that may help them achieve their educational goals. They will include a session with the Dylan Bradshaw Hairdressing Academy, A Science Workshop as well as presentations from representatives of the Institute of Technology of Blanchardstown and DCU Access Service. Sessions include a College Talk, Financial Talk and Double Disadvantage Talk. Study Skills sessions will also take place facilitated by Student Enrichment Services. To highlight STEM careers, our students, in association with Slingshot Academy will attend a full day programme at The National Gallery in Merrion Square.
Some of our past pupils will also drop in during the week to give talks about their college experiences. We hope the week will have a positive influence on our students by making them aware of their options after secondary school.
College Awareness Week aims to inspire and inform all students about the importance of having a post-secondary education plan. It advocates for students to have the choice to pursue the course best suited to their interests, abilities and future plans, whether that is a PLC qualification, an apprenticeship or a university degree.
College Awareness Week is supported by the Higher Education Authority, the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals and the Institute of Guidance Counsellors. The National Parents Council Post-Primary, the Irish Union of Second Level Students and Irish Business Employers Confederation have also come on board to lend their support.
Last year’s campaign, the first of its kind in Ireland, was a runaway success. Over the course of the week 363 events took place in many different locations including schools, higher educational institutes, community centres and libraries. The 2015 campaign is expected to bring even more participants on board, with an increase in the number of events and a strong focus on communities where participation in Higher Education remains below average.
College Awareness Week would like to gratefully acknowledge AIB and Perrigo for sponsoring this campaign and for their dedication to the betterment of communities and Irish society, through enhanced educational experiences.
